On Monday, residents in Ado-Ekiti, State capital of Ekiti State took to the social media to report the situation in the state. They reported that soldiers have taken over the state capital and were attacking the peaceful protesters. However, the Commissioner for Information and Values Orientation, Akin Omole refutes the claims of assaults on peaceful protesters by soldiers.
Nevertheless, he did not deny the facts that the soldiers were deployed by the State Government to protect the citizens. He refutes the claims that soldiers attacked the peaceful protesters in the state. Furthermore, he classified this as rumour circulating on social media.
“While the present administration in Ekiti recognizes and respects the right of peaceful assembly, and in fact, identifies with the people on the demand for good governance. All stakeholders must be mindful of the safety of all lives and both public and private properties in the State.
“Innocent law-abiding citizens should be allowed to go about their lawful businesses without hindrance while there must be due cognisance of the fact that willful destruction of properties will be detrimental to the socio-economic wellbeing of the people”.
Moreover, he said that the State Governor, Kayode Fayemi is also working on the police brutality issues. He has set up a Panel of Enquiry and Restitution for victims of SARS and related abuses. This panel will investigate all cases related to the SARS and police brutality in the State.
