Okonjo Iweala becomes the World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General (DG). This victory of hers put Nigeria at the forefront again. She is the first female DG who is also an African. Therefore, this is a major win for her, her family, the country and even the continent of Africa.
She became a winner by a wide margin over the South Korean rival Ms Yoo Myung-hee. Iweala has been having the back-ups of countries and even continents since she emerged as one of the finalists. Recently, the European Union also endorsed her reiterating that she is capable of handling the role.
This will not be the first time to be exposed to international dealings. She was once the World Bank Director. Nigerians are happy as Iweala becomes the WTO DG. Furthermore, her knowledge is vast as she is at the intersection of public health, economics and trade. Accordingly, she would be the best hand to approach the World Trade amidst this ravaging pandemic.
Furthermore, she also lends her voice in the #EndSARS protest in her country, Nigeria. The whole world expects to see a great development in this organization upon her assumption of duty.
